Posted By bill strachan1 I currently work in the Middle East where the conditions are obviously hot and sandy. Can anyone enlighten me of the safest and most practicable way of earthing portable generators. From the various guidance and user handbooks I have read, it would appear the standard earthing rod combined with dry sand does not provide adequate protection.

Posted By Garry Homer I suggest you post your question on the IET Discussion Forum www.theiet.orgBe more specific, generator size, protection equipment, use being made of the generator, island mode or connected to another system. No-doubt there will be other questions, but this should be a good starting point. Good luck Garry

Posted By Andrew Brown Bill Depends how big your generator is. For a small generator you may not need an earth The IEE now the IET have produced a guidance note on earthing small portable generators on construction sites in their 'Wiring Matters' magazine.
