Posted By Rob Randall The Workplace Health Safety and Welfare Regs used to specify the dimensions of guard rails etc. on a mezzanine floor or similar area. This specific requirement has been repealed by the Work at Height Regs. but there does not appear to be any corresponding requirement in those Regs.
Can anyone tell me if there is now any specific requirement for particular dimensions for edge protection except those laid down in Building Standards?
If there is not do we apply the Building Standards because they are best practice?
Please do not tell me to do a risk assessment unless you are also going to tell me where to find appropriate standards or guidance that will enable me to decide what dimensions and fixings etc. are appropriate in particular circumstances.
I am aware that this subject may already have been dealt with in a previous thread. If you know of one please point me in the right direction.

Posted By Phil As far as i am aware, if it for a public area then it needs to be 800mm high. For anyone who works in the area it needs to be 1100mm high.

Posted By Rob Randall Yes, schedule 2 of WAH would apply but it only gives dimensions for construction sites whereas the WHSW regs used to specify for all locations. It gave 1100mm for the top rail and also specified the requirement for a mid rail and the maximum gap and the height of the toe board.
The WAH regs no longer specifies for a non-construction application but simply says that:
Means of protection shall- (a) be of sufficient dimensions, of sufficient strength and rigidity for the purposes for which they are being used, and otherwise suitable

Posted By rees davies Rob, I think your on the right lines with the Building regs. These should give you all heights and dimensions you require, especially for widths of gaps in railing type edge protection.

Posted By rees davies Rob, if you type in planning doc k I think this will give you the information you seek. This is available as a free down load. Scroll to page page 12-14 and there is a note which basically say's that meeting the requirements will not result in an improvement notice being served.

Posted By Ali The 1100mm requirement for guard rails has not been repealed - only the requirement relating to the 2m rule. The WAHR require a new std of 950mm for guard rails specifically for construction work (mid rail at 470mm). The 1100mm rail applies to non construction work and still requires mid rails (eg mezzanine floor) Ali
