As well as talking to the person themself, I would approach the RNID http://www.rnid.org.uk/

MT has provided you with an ideal source to start with, however I would kindly point out, the type of equipment requested must be compatable and suited to that persons hearing loss (slight, moderate, severe, profound, and tinnitus sufferer).

As one who is profoundly hearing impaired, I use a Uniphone 1150 textphone landline and the BT textdirect scheme (refer to BT website for further info) which allows me to see what is being said by the other person (via a third party) and I respond accordingly.

Whilst on the road, the only options available is the Nokia 9210i communicator (the only mobile which incorporates and is compatible with the RNID textdirect software - only available through the vodaphone networks).

Word of warning, the mobile communicator is becoming difficult to source these days (Nokia have since upgraded the communicator twice/thrice but NOT made the newer versons compatible with the textdirect software)

Other than that, any other mobile would siffice if it was to be used for text messages.

Hope this helps.............!
