Posted By Mike Hann I am currently looking at the issues relating to the safe retrieval of slipped or fallen pallets of product from within warehouse storage racking. These are not pallets which have fallen from the racking to the floor, but pallets of product (cartons & packages) which have fallen over within the racking and need to be removed. Whilst not a particularly frequent occurrence, it does happen from time to time despite frequent reiteration of the need to only locate pallets which are in good condition and securely stretch wrapped. So, I need to make sure that there is a comprehensive SSW in place to ensure that they can be safely retrieved. We are using 'man up' VNA trucks to putaway and retrieve pallets in the racking and we also use these trucks to allow the operators to resolve the issue of slipped or fallen product where possible, without leaving the cab of the truck. The problem for us is if the product cannot be retrieved from within the confines of the truck and there is then a need to leave the truck and climb in to the racking albeit at the same level. Whilst we have a fully trained operative who uses a full body safety harness with two lanyards one of which is connected either to the VNA or the racking, I want to try and ensure that all possible angles are covered and ensure that this can be done as safely as possible. Any suggestions or advice from any of you who have addressed this particular problem in the past would be most welcome. Many thanks in advance. Mike

Posted By GARRY WIZZ Retrieval whilst in a safe platform was OK. Exiting the platform was a no because recovery of a suspended person safely was outside of our skills base. My policy was that the dislodge pallet/product was pushed/nudged till such time as it all fell down. At my next employer, they opted for bringing in a training team once a year so that we had the skills base and equipment to recover a suspended casualty. This cost more than just dumping the product. The main cause of pallet/product displacement i suffered from was caused by the pallet being placed in the racking to far back or being pushed back when it was being extracted. I was of the opinion that it required an engineering solution . The company folded so it was not progressed. Garry
