I have recently raised a concern with my MD regarding the increase in those who do not have English as first language. My main worry is that although I give them a copy of H&S Manual translated, I feel that there is a huge risk of them having accidents as they do not understand the Safe Operating Procedures and safe systems we have in place. There is also the issue of training on machines especially regarding guarding, e-stops, interlocke etc.

I have suggested doing a simple written assessment on the material covered at their H&S Induction which I do on first day, to determine their level of understanding of English.

Has anybody else came across this and if so would mind sharing solutions.

In practice as your employer is using the services of foreign workers on a regular basis then as a minimum the company should be providing all documentation that is relevant to the employee in a language that they understand, for example, english, german, spanish and polish (there being an increasing number coming over from eastern block countries.

Further to this there should be at least one person in any one group or team who understands written and verbal english and who can act as an interpreter.

If you don't have these methods or something similar in place how is your employer going to meet their duties under H&S legislation?

Waiting for the HSE to knock on the door after an event could be a costly exercise!
