Last night I watched Brainiac.

It had an experiment to find out which was most noisy - a pneumatic drill used to break up the road or the screaming of a young toddler / baby.

The experiment was not exactly by-the-book for scientific purist - but their noise meter indicate 119dB for the worker (who had ear defenders on) & 123dB for the screaming kid.

For that level of noise the daily exposure rate is exceeded after the child screams for 3 seconds.

Do those who employ nannys / wives(?!& husbands) insist that their employees - eliminate the child / substitute the child for a quieter one / isolate the child / isolate the nanny / limit the exposure time to less than the 3 seconds / day (this would be low salary for those just above the minimum wage / provide suitable hearing protection OR ignore the issue?

That's the great thing about being a grand parent - you can give them back!

It took Braniac to tell you this ????

Where have you been? Never heard a baby?

Did they also tell you that men tend to get far more stressed by the sound than women? Summat to do with our primeval ancestors and defending family ...

Good point though - nursery must be a great place to study 'industrial' deafness.

I always said a nursery was one of the loudest places.

By the time you add in the 'musical' instrument, the car/train noises, the arguments, the bell ringing, etc etc - better off in a jet factory!

Horses and cats much quieter.

Based on the maths / physics - all parents & employees of nursery schools should be affected by Noise Induced Hearing Loss. Is there any research in this field?

Or is this not an industry sector that is important to the nation?

Or, is the maths / physics behind the HSE / EU requirements flawed & those exposed to a time weighted 85dB are not really at risk - back to the nanny state, again.................
