Posted By Rob sharp I have been given the task of implementing risk assessments for the maintenance department. This is a large an complicated task. I would greatly appreciate any guidance on the best way to go about this. Do I need a risk assessment for every job? And what about when they are on breakdowns?

Posted By Brian Welch Rob, I have for many years slowly chipped away at the mess of risk assessments and now have them down in the low 2 digits from the many hundred. This mainly by grouping activities of a similar nature and then supporting these with specific risk assessments as necessary. The HSE has several sample R/A models which if you follow their lead will assist you in keeping the numbers down. http://www.hse.gov.uk/risk/casestudies/index.htmI also developed a R/A management model that might be of use getting your head around some of the many areas within this discipline. http://onsafelines.com/oslfilesetone/RA_Model.pdfHope this is of some use Brian

Posted By Adam Worth Try using a filter system to decide what level of risk assessment is required
1 - Simple task, done often by staff - A mental risk assessment or generic risk assessment may suffice
2 - More complex task carried out less frequently – use Permit to work / apply to all work carried out by contactors.
3 - Complex task - Permit + Full RA specific to task
That's a really simplified version but I'm sure you get the idea

To add to the above; don't do this on your own, use the experts that you have in the maintenance department, i.e. the operatives themselves that will appreciate the risks faced on a daily basis; perhaps they won't quite have the same attitude to negated risk that you will have, but it gives you far clearer detailing for each task by speaking and involving those that carry the risk on a day-to-day basis.
You'd have probably done it anyway but felt it was worth mentioning.
All the best
