hi all
Just pulled up outside our premises and looked across to see a roofer walking up the roof with a full bucket of hot bitumen. No climbing boards, ladder not tied off and working alone on a fragile roof.

I went across and spoke to the owners of the building, who I get on with very well. The answer I got was, well surely it is up to him how he does the job.

I explained that they have a duty of care towards anyone working on or entering their premises. I also pointed out the amount of fatalities from such actions. I even brought up the working at height regulations but I think it has all fallen on deaf ears.

In an effort to bring the point home I explained to him that should the guy fall through the roof, does he not think the hot bitumen may end on the factory staff, as well as the roofer.

Just looked again and the guy has gone, perhaps they do listen, did manage to get a good photo though.

Cracking result, who knows? You may just have saved a life or three.

Fantastic that you were not prepared to turn the other way and mutter; "ah what the heck, not my problem!"

It is good that you get on with them. I would follow up the next time you meet them in a relaxed atmosphere too - reinforcing your motive to help rather than interfere.

Good result.
