Why do you work in H&S?

a) for the money
b) to attract the opposite (or same) sex
c) to make the world a safer and better place
d) to annoy people

or another reason

Why, c) of course! I fell into H&S by accident (no pun intended) and found I enjoyed it. d) is an unhappy side effect and a) and b) just don't come into the equation.

Definetly not for the money - thats a laugh.! I came from an environmental management background and found myself in Health and Safety. Its enjoyable and I hope that I don't annoy that many people - at the end of the day they have to realise that Health and Safety may be annoying but we have their own best interests at heart.

Like most i guess, i kind of fell into it, but must admit it is very interesting, i just hope i don't end up like one of those people who wears a hi viz coat and goggles for presenting a DVD relating to DSE use, they give us safety folk a bad name:0

And yes, I'd agree, it wasn't for the money:)

As for B it doesnt work ... when I chat someone up I dread them asking what I do as most peoples eyes glaze over or tell me about the state of their office.

Oh well.

Other reason.

I used to have a proper job which was very stressful, managing people, working 12 hour shifts days and nights in a very hot environment, working weekends, bankholidays, getting my hands dirty, lugging heavy plant around etc.

Now I work 9 to 5, monday to friday. The hardest part was getting Dip 1 & 2.

My better half was really impressed by my 'Chartered Safety and Health Practitioner' enamel lapel badge and wouldn't stop stroking it.

I got, what my LA calls re-deployed into safety, seemed a good idea at the time (only get one choice of job take it or out the door), not so sure now. getting to the stage of being fed up trying to convince people to do the "sensible" thing. I suppose it pays the bills..just about. Oh well it's frday. and I only have 9 years till retirement.. that reminds me haven't got my euro lotto yet. Cheers all have a nice weekend!!!!!!!!

I do it to make everyone's job as difficult and time consuming as I can.

I also long for the day that a tabloid headline is dedicated to me, along the lines of 'conkers bonkers' or 'firemen banned from using ladders'

Then I'll know I've made it, maybe once I'm at such a level, I will start benefiting from option B.

I do it because of all the loving smiles and waves I get, and for the plethora of Christmas cards I receive each year.

Failing that, C.

My youngest brother asked for a job on one of my sites and I said no because I didn't think it was safe. Then I thought if it's not safe for him why should it be unsafe for others. Then got my boss to pay for safety training and here I am.

If I'm self righteous C " people go to work to earn a living not to get hurt"
If I'm being honest D I enjoy winding up ignorant greedy people who pray on others.

So (almost a revisit I guess, but it is the Friday just before the busiest weekend of the year for my colleagues in Fire & Rescue!))- if the idea is to hide our real vocation behind a word title- "what are we"?

Superman (presently earth-bound)?
or...

Interesting thread Phillip!

a) Definitely not!!
b) Not intentionally but I happily met my partner on the Diploma course, so yes!
c) Yes absolutely
d) No, but the way some dinosaurs react, you'd think it was! We're there to help and advise and hopefully improve safety for our co-workers, we're not THE ENEMY! (Phew feel better for that!)

a) Not a key motivator

b) Doesn't come into it

c) Is a key motivator

d) If that's what it takes to make them see the errors of their ways, unfortunately common sense is not so common...

I think it is not too ridiculous to liken it to the priesthood - it's a calling.

In my case, a friend started to say "Have you thought of a degree in Health .."
"..and Safety!" I finished. Like a light coming on, it seemed absolutely right. So I left engineering and set out on my first crusade.

Don't get me wrong though - it has been more like Spamalot than King Richard - but in my own small way, I like to think I have made a difference.

... and I still try the odd baptism in the pub ;-)

It sort of grabbed me! It's interesting you can never learn it all. It keeps the mind thinking and asking questions and there is satisfaction at the end of the day.

I have come to it late in life at 55 now taking NVQ4 and have my sights set on an environmental diploma and the construction certificate.

Also hope it will help pay the golf club fees later in life.

Not through choice!

I'm an Environmental Manager and too many employers think that this is just something which can be tagged onto H & S!!!
I've added H & S to my exisiting Quality and Environment competency.

Anyway to answer the question:

a) of course, need the dosh
b) I wish!!!
c) yes, but human nature never ceases to disappoint me
d) makes it all worthwhile!
