I've been informed that according to a well known earth moving equipment manufacturer that it is illegal to mark the safe working load on an excavator jib/boom if check valves are fitted.
Is this correct does anyone know? If it is several well known construction companies will need to amend their check sheets.

I thought the prohibition was that no SWL was appropriate for person lifting based on check valves being fitted which if you think about why they are fitted makes anything other than lifting for the purpose pretty obsolete on the equipment you describe, that's my thoughts anyway.

My understanding is that an excavator without check valves may be used as a lifting appliance only for operations directly related to the task of excavating, i.e. lifting pipes into position etc. In this situation the working load limit is 1 ton at any boom radius, and can therefore be displayed on the machine.
If loads greater than 1 ton are to be lifted by an excavator, check valves must be fitted and a duty chart provided. This means that the excavator may be equipped to lift variable loads at variable radii and therefor no WLL (SWL) can be displayed.
