Posted By tom boland New to forum here. We have numerous items of plant and machinery on construction site, and I was wondering if anybody has come across any BS or EN relating to recommended colours for construction plant. Most machinery is yellow or brightly coloured to enable it to stand out. We would like to be able to recommend a standard for site mobile equipment to allow easy visibility, especially fast moving plant such as wheeled excavators and telescopic forklifts. Any assistance would be much appreciated. Tom

Posted By Jim Walker I doubt there is any requirement.
Yellow I think started with JCB and he used it originally because of a mixing error and he was able to buy a job lot cheap.
By the way........ I was recently on a job where a large complex piece of plant was designed & ordered. The supplier was worryingly quiet so the project manager rang him up to see how the job was progressing. He received a detailed explanation as to why the equipment was not going to arrive by the deadline (which was going to cause massive problems down the line!). After assurances that they would get it delivered ASAP the supplier said "by the way what colour would you like it". At this the project manager finally lost his temper and said " I don't care if its f***ing bright pink just get it here on time!".
I can thus confirm bright pink certainly is visible at some distance.

Posted By Peter Moran For security reasons in order to discourage the theft of site plant an unusual colour scheme is a good idea. Plant sprayed-up in a distinctive colour are much easier for the authorities to discover after a theft and return to the rightful owner. Just imagine the problem with a theft alert such as 'be on the look out for a yellow JCB'!........in a bright purple, green, red or mixture of a number of colours plant is much less attractive to 'nick' due to the problems involved in re-spraying. 'OPERC' (Off-Highway Plant and Equipment Research Centre) at Loughborough University have produced a very useful report on the subject of plant security to the industry.
