At work we have a ground floor reception/lobby area which has 2 exits from it, one is covered by a roller door and the other leads onto a protected escape route. The first floor office has a door leading onto the wooden stairs and I would like to class this as an exit route to supliment the other one which is protected all the way out.

The question is; can a lobby be used as an escape route. It has furniture and a PC in it but the risk of fire is low and all doors leading onto it are 30 minute fire doors.

Thanks!

Does it have smoke detection?

No, the building only has a manual fire alarm with no call points on the first floor. There is a call point in the lobby though.

Your fire risk assessment should identify that you need to place a smoke detector in the reception area. If people have to pass through it to get out and there are PC's etc in there then it needs to be part of the protected escape route.

the RA does indicate that a fire alarm is required but it has been ruled out by management. There is a protected escape route fromk upstairs, I just wanted to use this as a backup.
