Carraige of Petrol and Diesel in Company Vans

I understand that the maximum quantity of diesel that we can carry in our works vans is 1000 litre and for petrol this is 333 litre.
I read somewhere that there is a limitation on the individual containers!
Can anyone clarify?

There are legal requirements - look up ADR in google.
My knowledge is marine and I know limits are often different for road transport.

The confusion comes as I understood that the petrol limit was 200 litre with individual containers limited to 10 litre, and the diesel limit was set at 500 litre with individual containers limited to 25 litre.

We don't!
We usually only carry 1 jerrycan (20 litre)each of both diesel and petrol.
I thought that the individual maximum for petrol was 10 litre up to a maximum of 200 litre.

The 10 litre container size for petrol is that imposed on retail petrol filling stations by the licensing authorities, who may also have set condition on the number of containers allowed (2).
In any event carriage in greater amounts in an enclosed vehicle is not IMHO particularly wise.
Glad to see you're sticking to sensible limits.

It depends on the packing group but in the exemptions to ADR (1.1.3.3 (b) "A Max of 60 Litres per transport unit may be carried in portable fuel containers"
However in the HSE CDG Manual (http://www.hse.gov.uk/cdg/manual/index.htm)
Diesel and gas oil (UN 1202) are in scope up to flash point 100 oC. This means that many operations such as moving fuel to construction sites, forestry operations etc. are now subject to the regulations (but certain vehicles are exempt - see Main exemptions). The rules for tanks, tankers and carrying of packages such as jerrycans, drums and IBCs are now the same as for other substances. Because diesel/fuel oil is in TC 3, up to 1000 litres may be carried in packages without application of much of the regulations (small load exemption). This exemption will be enough for many users, but for others, exemptions have been allowed as follows. There is also some guidance on HSE’s web site.
