Can anyone shed some light on the above for construction sites.

Yes the guidance says chairs with backs but does that make benches banned?

I have seen contractors working off a chair so many times in the past but never seen a bench go missing from the welfare.

The HSE say base it on a risk assessment which is a good approach as i agree if a carpet fitter is on his hands and knees all day when he has a break back support is very important.

But lets not forget welfare areas are for tea and lunch breaks i've yet to hear of anyone suffering long term back injuries through sitting at a bench in welfare whats coming next leather sofa's from IKEA.

I'm using a common sense approach as the £6 chairs hired seem to get backs broken on a regular basis.

What are you views colleagues?

Tony,

The regs determine seats with backs and I recently spent some time getting a contractor to have his cabin benches changed to benches with backs. It is important for the operatives to rest properly and I think the chairs you are probably talking about are not up to standard especially if you consider the weight of the user. All plastic moulded chairs have weight limits - you should investigate this.

I'm in the process of phasing these changes in but this is once more H&S gone mad,

In 2010 all welfare areas shall have fixed seating and tables like in cafes what do we do when someone is oversize? Is it going to get to the stage where the welfare areas are normal and large areas.

This was a subject i recently covered with my workforce and i think its got to be treated light heartedly.

Someone of the workforce suggested opening an IKEA account for leather sofa or sofa beds for Contractors who work long hours.
