A well known phrase associated with modern e-comms is it not?
I have lost count of the threads bemoaning or chastising those who believe and publish articles claiming that H&S is boring, nanny state, run by idiots wearing elbow patches, ruining our children’s’ futures, costing small businesses too much money.
I also have lost count of the rebuttals from the ‘serious times’ squad in the HSE or IOSH or ROSPA. In fact, the whole process has become a complete bore.
So here is my story for this Friday.
The trolls find some nuts on the forest floor, gobble them up; then we come along and say “actually they are not nuts, they are grass roots”. Trolls don’t like grass roots so they ignore us and go searching for the nuts they know they can find. Nuts are allegedly quite plentiful at the moment but indications are that future harvests will not be so good.
Trolls get fatter in the short term, we humph louder but nothing really changes because trolls can't hear humphs as well as they can smell nuts.
So why don't we just let the trolls eat all the nuts whilst we get on with growing grass roots. The nuts will run out soon enough and then the trolls, who are a flighty lot by and large, will rampage onto a new horizon.
In the meantime, we could focus our time on tending the grass. Grass can be tended quietly. Trolls on the other hand need to be fed explicitly and in public.

Wrong! It's not "idiots wearing elbow patches" it's "idiots wearing elbow patches and lapel badges, carrying a clipboard".

The rest of your post - well, have you been eating these nuts yourself? I got lost by the second sentence.........

Well Said Pete, It is just like healthy school dinners..

For me it is the challenge of the old boys saying that is the way we have always done it, compared to the new starts who do not object to the higher expectation.

I have often said health and safety is flying in the face of human evolution and natures selecton of the weakest and dumbest!

Roll on the darwin awards!!!

Pete,

well said......the ethos of your story is very good and correct in terms of what we should be doing.

However, there are some amongst our ranks that have not yet distinguished the difference between the grass shoots and the nuts, and so are, possibly unwittingly, still cultivating nuts at such a rate that the trolls will be feasting for a while yet.
I myself am extremely fond of grass shoots and tend to them with loving care, however, I am still asked if I can provide any nuts, usually by people who have little understanding of the competencies to grow grass shoots (directors, managers etc who would like to stop funding something etc), my usual response is to explain that "anyone can grow nuts, but only the learned can grow grass and understand why it is so important for the grass to flourish, and if they would like any advice on how to grow grass of their own, I'm happy to help"

Its hard work watching the grass grow!!

Elfansafety a small town nestled in the hills of Regulation has been invaded by an army of extremely aggressive trolls.

The first evidence of the trolls came when organising the town fair. Organisers were met by ugly little creatures with protruding tusks demanding the hills of Legislation was not able to hold such fairs

The second thing that alerted the citizens to the invasion was the teenagers in the area were all wearing glasses and gloves to play conkers.

Trolls originate from Scandinavian folklore and have been known to abduct humans ideas and make them their own. Trolls are also well known for stealing fun from the inhabitants of Elfansafety and could even steal the food right off the plates of people eating dinner.

The mayor of Elfansafety said, we think they came to our town in a shipment of Journalistic garbage about a year ago.

Exterminators have been called in to eradicate the pesky creatures but standard methods have proved to be ineffective. It seems no one in the modern age is specializing in troll extermination.

Troll infestation can cause a myriad of problems ranging from misleading information to making mountains out of troll hills

regards
Ted

My nuts all got eaten by the squirrels and my apples were mostly diseased this year. Raspberries were plentiful and sweet. Maybe plums & pears in 2 years.

My mate has a blackberry and can't get away from his emails so I don't want one thanks.

The grass looks much greener over the fence but some bloke on a machine with funny ear-things and a mask keeps cutting it down so it never gets a chance to grow. Is he a troll? He doesn't live under a bridge.
