Child Friendly Construction Safety Training Material

Posted By Andrew W Good Afternoon
As a parent governor of my local infants school I'd like to give a construction safety talk to the pupils as we are about to have an extension built onto the school. I've got plenty of adult presentations and gory stuff but need something that won't give the little darlings nightmares but will inform them of just how dangerous construction sites are. Bear in mind these children are aged from 5 - 8 years old.
Can anybody out there help or point me in the right direction.
Thanks in anticipation
Andy W

Posted By Darren (Daz) Fraser Andy Contact the larger construction companies as I seem too remember one of them doing just this sort of thing at local schools before any construction project within the area, unfortunately I cannot remember who it was. Alternatively get in contact with the construction company that is carrying out the work and ask them if they would put something together or come in and chat. Finally the following link to the HSE website has some useful info in the form of a printable pdf poster and booklet http://www.hse.gov.uk/press/2002/e02137.htmHope that helps

Posted By Martyn Hendrie I have carried out these presentations in the past and always found that the following worked for the age group you indicate.
Get two sets of all the various types of PPE that can be found in use on site.
Ask the children for 2 volunteers (usually 1 boy & 1 girl). As you show the audience each type of PPE, explain why it is worn and dress the volunteers up (the PPE obviously won't fit the kids which usually gets a laugh)
Once all the PPE is explained make use of the fact that to keep the workers safe on site they have to wear their PPE and ask if the children would be safe on site without it. That will allow you to introduce the wider issues about not going onto the site.
To reinforce we used to show the HSE video "Game Over" (probably a bit dated now)
Afterwards if there is time allow the other kids in the audience to try some of the PPE on.
Kids find it fun but also has a serious message.
Hope this helps

Posted By Richard Altoft HSEbooks have a DVD for £25 called Kidsafe which includes construction and a lot of other stuff - I have not seen it but we have just gifted some to local primary and junior schools and we are awaiting feedback. As a parent, grandparent, ex construction manager and now H&S pro and admittedly the kind of lad who when much younger loved construction sites when no one else was around to clear me off can I just stress you must not inadvertently glamorise sites as all kids see everything as a playground or as a big big adventure. Education is great but strong fences must still be erected and maintained. At that age kids do not understand risk but they understand "dares" and they must be given clear rules and very good very consistent examples to follow. Best of luck and keep up the good work R
