Posted By Mike B We have a situation where we require a mule type ATV to leave part of our site and enter another part of our site about a quarter of a mile down a very quiet public road. I understand there are various issues to deal with for general road use such as: lighting requirements, registration, tax, approved for use on the road, insurance, valid driving licence and speed. Has anyone had a similar experience to this and does anyone know if there are more factors to consider, or if indeed all of the above are required if the use is only limited to a short stretch of road as I've described. PS it is not used in agriculture or horticulture and they seem to have certain exemptions up to 1.5 KM distance. Mike

Posted By Chris Huckle Hi Mike We run three Polaris Rangers and a Kawasaki Mule these are all registered as other agricultural vehicles. When we purchased them we made sure that they all had lighting kits etc, to ensure they were road legal. Our insurance also states that we are covered for cars, vans and agricultural vehicles, as we are involved in environmental research. I think what I am trying to say is that it depends on what you have it registered as during first licensing and registration. The only other category that they may fit into if not already registered is code 54- A light 4X4 Utility. But have a look at V355 which may help clarify things a little. Cheers Chris

Posted By Mike B Thanks for the information Chris. I think I know how to proceed with this now. I believe I am meeting most of the requirements other than registration and tax (probably exempt?). Did you get number plate lights installed after you registered your vehicles and fitted the plates?

Posted By Chris Huckle Hi Mike We got the suppliers to register the vehicles and ensure that they were road legal and compliant, so we put the responsibility on them. They seemed to have a kit that they fitted that included number plate lights indicators and all the other associated lights. We only have a rear number plate fitted (as these are agricultural vehicles) and it is fitted at high level on the back of the cab on all of our machines. With the rear lights at high level on the Mule, on the Polaris the high level rear lights act as a repeater set for those mounted lower down. Cheers Chris
