Posted By mark walker Has anybody had any experience of design, manufacture and sale of new equipment. I am working with a client on a hydraulic 205L barrel crusher, a prototype has been developed and I am looking for advice/help on how to find out what standards it needs to comply with? does it need to be approved by an external body before it can go on sale? can we issue the CE marking? etc. Any guidance would be gratefully appreciated.

Posted By holmezy Mark,
it would need to satisfy the supply of machinery regs, (inc essential h+s reqts which covers safety devices, guards, e-stops etc), possibly the pressure regs (dependant on the pressure, power pack, pressure vessel etc), you would need to compile a technical file for the equipment (including design plans and features, ratings, maintenance, test certs etc), safe working instructions would be required. Once you have got all these you can tecnically certify the equipment yourself, ie stick a ce mark on it to the relevant standard and issue a certificate of conformity. However, I would suggest that its probably best to be 3rd party approved.
I've probably forgot something but thats more or less what you need to do.

Posted By holmezy Mark,
oh....and get hold of a copy of BSEN954-1 (safety of machinery - control systems) and
URN95/650 which is a BSI product standard for machinery and guidance on the regs. This almost walks you through the requirements inc CE marking, dec of conformity etc

Posted By Tom Doyle Mark, You may also want to get a copy of BS EN ISO 13849-1:2006 which replaces BS EN 954-1:1997, and is applicable as of late 2009. Good luck

Get hold of a copy of the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations.
These regulations lay down what a supplier must do before putting a machine on the market.
The above is law and costs a hell of a lot cheaper than some overpriced standard which is not law.
