Here's a new challenge for Ray to champion our profession.
I was awoken sharply this morning by the BBC, yes the BBC a reasonable news reporting agency!
In a piece regarding Christmas lights and environmental issues on the 6:30 news on BBC 1. APPARENTLY Northampton council have Said Elf N Safety has stopped them putting up the Christmas lights, because firemen and staff need training to use cherry pickers and therefore require training. In my many years on this planet I cant remember Christmas lights being put up any other way. Why would the fire brigade be putting up Lights, I know a few firemen may be electricians in their own time but this just makes more nonsense of this piece.
Lets all hope one day we can stop the media reporting nonsense about our profession.
Oh well here goes another day of being hated for cancelling Christmas, banning conkers, outlawing, armbands, banning hot coffee etc etc.

The same news item had Bill Turnbull reading an article from the Daily Mail regarding 'the health & safety brigade' forcing Santa to wear a safety belt. Bill said it was health & safety gone mad. It is in fact insurers who require the wearing of the seat belt in this case or else they will increase the premium.

Please someone at IOSH and all those interested, do as I have done and write to BBC news watch and give them what for!!

Thanks

Kenny

This latter story appeared in the Telegraph this morning, with a Front Page 'link' entitled "Santa falls foul of elf 'n' safety", and then nearly one third including pictures article on page 9 under the banner "Santa forced to belt up by the elf and safety killjoys".

What response is forthcoming from IOSH, and will it be addressed not just to the press but also to the various organisations (Round Tables / Lions Clubs) of supposedly professional business people who should themselves know better to to blame 'health and safety for all the life's downsides - they never praise the upsides, and the fact that they and their colleagues might have benefited in the past.

Simon (who has sat on a number of sleighs in his time!)

I think I was listening to the same report on BBC radio. If I remember rightly it claimed that health and safety legislation had been tightened up in this area recently which meant that fire fighters now needed training to use a cherry picker and the fire brigade had other things to spend their money on.
I cant think of any 'tightening up of legislation' in this area. And how outrageous is it that some-one must be trained before uses a cherry picker...
Needless to say my husband got woken up by me ranting at him.

PS since when did the fire brigade become a charity organisation to assist with this stuff

I too have read the article on Santa having to wear a seat belt & saw the delightful Collette MacBeth on the Beeb explaining about the "elf n safety" problems with christmas lights. One reason given by her was that nuts fixing the lights to lamposts etc needed "pressure testing"!

Eh!

I assume some dimwit meant they needed to be torqued up to a certain level? Still confuses me cos I wouldn't have thought lights would have put that much strain on the nuts & bolts, not like the engine on my car for example.

Come on IOSH, we've got a new President who needs wheeling out on breakfast telly dressed as Santa (or possibly Satan?) to tell the world we love Christmas & we want to help you enjoy it & that lawyers & the insurance industry are to blame.

I was starting to feel christmassy this week but the delightful Collette made me shout at the telly.

Bah Humbug!

For every "Unjust" story there is a balance. Also from the BBC......

Or even play to the stereotype and dress as Satan.

It would surely prick the pomposity of the current debate.

Just read the article from the Beeb about the lights that fell down. As she was hit by bricks I would hazard a guess at this stage that the structural integrity of the wall was to blame as there were too many lights to be supported & the engineers failed to assess accordingly.

My condolences go out to the injured lady.

But it's not all bad news cos it meant some respite from Chas & Dave.

Anyone living in Northampton knows that over the last few years the 'Christmas Lights' have got worse and worse, and are now not worth the bother of putting up.

As the Council appears to be rapidly going bankrupt - I assumed this is their way of disguising yet another cost cutting exercise.
