If you are having a deep excavation next to a wall, what is the normal method of determining that the wall is not going to fall

By employing a structural engineer or temporary works engineer to design the relevant support works for the task.
Do not even try to guesstimate the answer because, unless you are one of the above, chances are you will be wrong.
