hello all,

i am starting a dissertation entitled:

"An investigation into the accuracy of methodologies used for calculating fire load densities in buildings. The methodology used to determine fire/fuel loads tends to vary from study to study. This project will involve reviewing and comparing a range of methodologies."

i haven't however been able to get a grasp of what the different methodologies are. I'm aware that fire load density is mass x calorific value / area etc, but i am struggling to find out more.

any help or direction would be really appreciated.

thanks

Hi Jules

You could start your studies by carrying out a google search for 'cone calorimeter'.

A good book to read will be Dougal Drysdale's 'An Introduction To Fire Dynamics'. Also search for publications by Quintiere and most importantly by Dr. Vytenis Babrauskas.

You could also look at the BRE's website
- http://projects.bre.co.uk/frsdiv/designfires/

This should be enough to get you going.

Difficult subject - good luck!

Regards
Shaun
