Posted By Edward Deighan Dear All
We have to get on top of road tanks at a customer's site. We are planning to design and make a platform to allow us to do this safely. I know the Working at Height Regulaiton apply, but isd there any specific legislation we need to look at with regards to the design issues i.e. handrails, toeboards etc. Is there anything Im overlooking here Many Thanks

Posted By Dave Merchant The WAHR doesn't specify the dimensions in your case, as the only numbers they quote are for "construction" - all other applications are required to be "suitable". However if you define your road tank as a machine under SM(S)R then BS EN ISO 14122-2 would apply to the "working platform" and BS EN ISO 14122-3 would apply to guard-rails. There's a lot of detail in the docs so you'd need to read them yourself, but for example the guard-rails would need to have:-
- height of at least 1100mm from plane of the working platform - at least one intermediate horizontal rail or equivalent, so the vertical gaps are no more than 500mm - a toe-plate of minimum height 100mm
structural strength and rigidity is also defined in the standard, as are the testing procedures.
