Posted By Lewis Eckett We are thinking of opening a retail showroom/store in an industrial unit which features a mezzanine floor. There is one set of stairs up and that's it. Would we need to build a separate set of stairs for fire exit or maybe increase the size of the existing staircase? The mezzanine area is approx 1500 sq ft. The stairs run down to the back of the building and out of the loading bay area. Hope someone can help!

Posted By Ashley Wood You would require a fire strategy document to present to the building control authorities and fire authorities. You would need to follow the recommendations of 'Approved Document B'. You would need to provide a secondary means of escape ideally external i.e steel escape stairs. Without having details of the job it is hard to advise further. Hope it helps a little?
