Posted By william espie Hi Folks, I was wondering if any has any method of Brushing down a flat bed lorry without the need to actually climb on top. My company has an out right ban on climbing on to the back of a flat bed, our sites are not suitable to be able to provide the proper access and fall arrest equipment that you would usually see in factories or yards. Any info would be appreciated. Wullie. william.espie@btinternet.com

Posted By Dave Merchant Sounds like in this case the H+S policy has been applied too far. There's no absolute restriction on people accessing vehicles needing PPE or fall arrest, and while protective measures are 'advised' by the HSE where reasonably practicable, there are thousands of people standing on the flatbeds of delivery trucks every day and doing it with a perfectly acceptable level of safety, simply by use of common sense and the number one eyeball. Creating a vastly complicated system to avoid accessing the vehicle presumably will need people to be standing higher than the surface so they can see what they're doing - therefore doesn't solve anything.

Posted By Pete Longworth I agree with Dave here. In the absence of anything else you will have to rely on robust, properly enforced procedural controls. Things like "when moving about on the bed always face the direction of travel" ie don't walk backwards. Judging by the constraints that you describe I can't see how you can clean a flatbed without accessing the platform.
