Posted By Jameskavanagh Does anyone use hand held scanners in the workplace(e.g. Psion type equipment / PDA's). What is your opinion of them being classified as display screen equipment? The regulations exclude portable systems not in prolonged use (regulation 1(4)d) and also calculators, cash registers or any equipment having a small data or measurement display reequired for direct use of the equipment (1(4)e). Our scanners have numerical keypads and various function keys with a screen of about 4" x 3", but no full alpha characters. I think as it is not intensive or constant numerical/data input and as the scanners are handheld and can be viewed at various distances they are not considered DSE equipment. Would like to know what other people think.

Posted By lizzie harvey Hi James We use HHT's regularly at work. We don't consider them as DSE either, since the user isn't constantly staring at the screen (and the batteries never last long enough anyway!) Hope this helps Lizzie

Posted By Alan Nicholls Hi You have answered your own question. Size layout and time used, NOT DSE. Regards Alan N
