Just wondering if anybody can point me in the direction where i can obtain information on the risks involved when constructing an airport apron airside. I am aware of time working restriction etc but further information would be helpful.

Thanks

Try Googling - CAP 642 Airside Safety managment as a starter. The CAA have a raft of other relevant documents on their website

Try the US FAA website .

I had to deal with a similar query when I was managing a technical HSE information service.

I could find a document that dealt with construction activities airside - that was extremely comprehensive--this was some 6 years ago!!

You may want to to refer to the following FAA guidance unless there are specific ones from the CAA:-

Operational safety on airports during construction
http://www.faa.gov/airpo...-5370-2E/150_5370_2e.pdf

Construction On or Near Airports

As Jay has mentioned have a look at CAP 642 which can be downloaded from the Internet. Other than that consider all the usual construction risks plus:

- Noise
- Security clearance for site personnel (not strictly H&S but needs consideration)
- Escorting of delivery vehicles
- Jet Wash
- Prop wash
- FOD (Foreign Object Debris)
- Airside inductions by the airport
- Airside driver training
- Wing tip clearance
- Communication protocol's

Planning and co-ordination are also significant issues particularly if you impact on aircraft stands and taxiways etc.

Also if using any form of cranage or piling rigs etc, you may need a special licence.

I hope that this helps.

Regards

Steve

Oh and I should have added, be very very aware of all buried cables, assume that everything is live and system critical, the last thing you would want to do is affect the runway lighting, communications systems or radar feed!
