Calling all LOLER experts!!
A contractor has a man riding basket on one of our sites. It has a certificate of conformity dated 2004 and has accompanying inspection sheets showing visual inspections at regular intervals (weekly inspections)etc, carried out by the site foreman.
The ACoP states these items should be checked by a competent person every 6 months and should have a thorough inspection every 4 years.
What checks would you expect to have been carried out during the 6 monthly inspection and how should it be recorded?
I am asking because I am concerned that the contractor is simply doing a quick visual inspection every week and the 6 monthly check seems to be the same inspection. It may be that this is sufficient but I would have thought that the 6 monthly check would be more stringent and more detail recorded.
Please help to clear this up!
Thanks,
Jason

In my experience the equipment manufacturer will specify the inspection requirements, hope this helps.

LOLER regulation 9 refers to the need for thorough examination and inspection every six months and regulation 10 describes the report and defects actions. The clear implication is that this is more than a weekly inspection otherwise the text "thorough examination" would not be included.
A simple inspection every 6 months will not satisfy the reulatory requirements, even if also carried out monthly, weekly or even daily unless these are also thorough examinations.

Thanks Robert, Just as I thought.
I have just spoken to our Construction Manager who raised the question and he tells me there is no written weekly inspections (just visual) and the 6 monthly inspection record seems to be a form similar to the F91 which is very basic.
I think we will be having a word.
Cheers,

Daily pre use checks carried out by a competent person are required by LOLER. An example of a typical pre use check sheet can be found in Annexe E of BS7121 Part 2
A 6 monthly Thorough Examination Report caried out by a competent person is also required by LOLER. Details of what should be recorded on a Thorough Examination Report can be found in Annexe A of BS7121 part 2.
Wonder how the user handles the requirements for a 50% derating of the equipment and cranage when used for man riding duties?

The weekly should be similar to the form produced under PUWER 98 for work equipment. I suspect that it is the old F91 that is being used as it seems to have stuck with many contractors. Having said that it is deficient in the information required.
The 6 monthly document must comply with Schedule 1 of LOLER. Looks as though the contractor may soon have a work hiatus on your site:-)

Thanks for all your replies.
It definately seems that they're recording of inspections is lacking and I will be pointing this out to them in the very near future.

In the past few years I've come across examples such as an insurance engineer-surveyor who seemed to have "thoroughly examined" some 34 fork trucks and pallet trucks in a large distribution warehouse in a period of 6 hours - that's 1 every 10 minutes not counting tea breaks and lunch, and included a "non-thorough examination" of a truck which wasn't even on site!
One of my clients who runs a crane hire business and carries out his own LOLER examinations, (but not on his own kit) told me last week that an insurance engineer-surveyor had carried out a LOLER "thorough examination" on one of his mobile crane jibs with a pair of binoculars......
By this standard the examination regime you outline is positively luxurious!!!!
These are only two of a steady trickle of disturbing reports I come across.
For myself, I'd take the evidence of any statutory examination certificate with a large pinch of salt..
