Try the Construction Industry Publications,
"Construction H&S Manual vols 1&2". They are as good as anything around. Also GE700 from Construction skills (CITB).

I recommend Principles of Construction Safety by Allan St John Holt, but it hasn't been updated since 2001 (hasn't it??).
Is it 'reading' or 'reference'?
Certainly the big blue books vol's 1&2 are the definitive word for detail, but at 1000+ pages, I certainly wouldn't read them.

Hi Simon,
I can thoroughly recommend "Introduction to Health and Safety in Construction" by Phil Hughes and Ed Ferrett. It is aimed mainly at NEBOSH Construction Cert' course. It costs approximately £40 (AMAZON, TSO, Waterstone etc). It is probably the best construction H&S book that I have ever seen and regularly use.

The only thing that it does not have is the latest CDM Regulations, but full guidance on these can be found (free) on the Construction Skills Website:
