Hello Folks,

I have been offered an interview with a company manufacturing forklifts. The vacancy is for a Health and Safety officer to join an existing H&S Team. Can anyone offer any advice for preparing for this interview, anything in particular i should be aware of?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Be enthusiastic. Do a bit of research on the company. Sometimes when you look through their website you can pick out little nuggets of information. Most people do that but if you look for anything out of the ordinary it may prove useful.
At the end of the interview when they ask if you have any questions, ask them directly if there is anything about you that causes them concern. That way, if there is anything you can address it straight away and turn a negative into a positive
Good luck.

Ronan,

Have you experience within this industry, e.g. engineering and manufacturing? Go to the HSE website and look for associated issues. I'd focus on your knowledge of applying PUWER, COSHH, Manual Handling. Show that you are good at working with people and that you have good listening skills as getting others involved and taking on their ideas in risk management is an important skill to have as an H&S advisor. (in my opinion anyway). Just be confident in your ability and show a desire to develop and i'm sure you will be spot on.

Good luck, Gav

Good luck with the interview but be sure it is the job you want!
I have just began a new job and i am starting to regret my decision! (too long a commute not enough money, thought I could handle it!)

Always try to have one or two questions
a good one is to ask about career progression, training schemes etc.

going onto the companies website (if they have one) as suggested above is a good idea as companies like people to be interested in them -drop that in somewhere e.g. I saw on your website you had a social club etc etc.

Good luck, let us know how you get on

Ronan,

Buff up on recent changes / forthcoming legislation that may be appropriate to their environment.

For example, potentially the past changes to the Noise Regulations and the Fire Reform Order and the potential implications of the forthcoming Corporate Manslaughter Act.

I'm sure there may be others, that's just a starter.

Good luck.

In addition to GavinR's list, and bearing in mind the manufactured product, I'd suggest brushing up on LOLER as well. Good luck.

Just to add to the above advice:
Don't try to rush in with answers to questions, take your time and consider the best way of answering it. If you don't know the answer say you know where to get the answer rather than make it up.
Good Luck
