Anyone know where I can hire the above? Had considered buying until I got the quotes - £4000 for the pendulum and £800 for the surface microroughness meter. Erk!!!

I think the environmental health dept of local authorities have had in the past an arrangement with HSE to lend/loan surface microroughness meters. We arranged to borrowed one a few years ago but in the end because the device was quite erratic the EH officer came out and did the measurement for us.

"Speedy Hire" might be worth a try.

Try asking your local HSE inspector - they sometimes lend them out.

Thanks to all who responded. I think I'm sorted - a fellow consulting engineer has played the sympathy card and persuaded one of his colleagues to lend me his gear free for my first inspection and to give me some training on the pendulum!!!

And going forward he apparently hires it out for £100 a time - a bargain me thinks so I'm going to go with that.
