Scenario- Business Currently uses a small van for transporting oil,gas and chemical samples 3 miles to a laboratory. Van has sealed division between driver and storage area of van. Van is equipped with roof vent and kitted out to hold the sample containers. In times when the van is out for repair, a temporary van is supplied which has no roof vent- Responsible person has stated that the "regs" do not require the van to have a vent. Don't think this is right. Anyone have expierience of transportation of chemicals etc and of where it states the requirements for this.

NB- Quantities are roughly 10 litres per trip
of various substances-

I also don't believe it is a requirement to have a ventilated van.

You concentrate on the carriage of chemical samples but also say at the beginning of your post that gas is carried.

Is compressed gas is carried them there are further requirements regarding unventilated vans.

thanks for the link. The detail of the samples carried are:

Liquids: which consist of Crude oil, Chemicals such as Glycol and Amines and Water Samples.

Gasses: In long cylinders of approx capacity 5 litres such as Propane and Butane.

Reading the link you sent it would appear that a vented van is a requirement when carrying gas cylinders.

No it doesn't have to be ventilated, it goes on to read that if the van is not ventilated then it must have a sign on the loading doors saying: "Warning, No Ventilation, Open with Caution".

Would it not be the case that the substance COSHH assessments would identify any risks associated to requirements for ventilation. The asessments should consider transportation. Ie, what exactly could happen if the substances were accidentally realeasaed in to the confines of the van. Inhalation and fire/explosion risk would seem to be the most obvious.
