Posted By Johno Hi, We are currently undergoing a total refurbishment of our site which includes replacing all doors. The builders seem intent on installing signs of every type on all doors. We have "Fire door keep shut" on doors which are actually fire doors, thats OK. We have fire exit above doors which are part of an escape route, this is also OK. Today, he wants to install small signs, the same size as "fire door keep shut" that say "Fire Exit Keep Clear" on all the doors that are part of the escape route. This seems over the top to me. I suggested proper 2" lettering on the outside of dedicated fire exits and leave it at that but he is telling me this is a requirement. What do you have on your fire exits? My logic is that every door is a fire exit, depending on which side you are on! We did have some issues with the doors not being big enough to fit all the signs on before the refurb and I really dont want to overwhelm the place with signs stating the obvious. Thanks

Posted By Paul Duell I would suggest that anyone who needs telling to keep a doorway clear probably isn't going to read the sign anyway! And if they did, they wouldn't take any notice of it. Keeping traffic areas clear is something much better achieved by a good management system - regular inspections, and if you find an issue, finding out why it happened and putting the cause right. Remember that nobody's life was ever saved by a sign: Put up the signs that are legally required and leave it at that.

Posted By Ashley Wood You should only have the fire door sign on a fire door. Electrical cupboards and other rooms that have fire doors fitted should have a sign saying 'fire door keep locked'. The only sign you need on a final exit door is 'push bar to open', above on the wall should be 'fire exit' with the running man. On the outside face a sign saying 'keep clear fire exit' is recommended.

Posted By Heather Collins We have "Fire Exit Keep Closed" on fire doors (as you do), the correct directional running man signs above every door on fire escape routes, final fire exit signs on every final exit door and "Fire Exit Keep Clear" on the outside of every final fire exit door to make sure no-one leave anything outside it that obstructs the exit. This is in a building built to the (previous) requirements under the Fire Certification regime and as specified by the Fire Authority. You need to decide based on your fire risk assessment what is appropriate for you, not let someone with a vested interest in selling you stuff get away with quoting fake legal requirements at you. I've had the same problem with fire extinguisher companies. Eventually I had to explain to them that yes I was competent to judge for myself how many extinguishers we needed, no I didn't need their 6 extra CO2 extinguishers and yes I was willing to take full responsibility for not taking them!

Posted By TBC I agree with the sound advice given here. In this builders race to put up as many signs as possible - did they also get the directional arrows and final exit sign correct?

Posted By Johno I think we are all in agreement here. Does anyone know where the actual legislation is for this? My RA does identify the signs but it is always nice to back it up with someting concrete. Thanks for settling my aprehension once again :)

Posted By TBC Nice one Heather - I had a similar problem with a well known extinguisher company some years ago. They didn't get the contract for over 1100 retail outlets renewed.
