i'm quite new in the field of health & safety. i've started my new job in Mauritius and the company i work for has no health and safety management system. i've been ask to set up the system.
could somebody advise me where to start, what pieces of information i must look for, etc..

1. Start with any legislation within your country that relates to health and safety, and any specific requirements.
2. Any best practice for your specific industry.
3. Any safety groups / branches / affiliations you can join either as a company or an individual.
4. Obtain a copy of OHSAS 18002 (guidance document for the specification of a H&S Management system), or visit the International Labour Organisation website and download their free guidance on H&S management systems
5. Although a UK government agency, look on the Health and Safety Executive website, free publications area and download booklets on H&S management.
6. If not already in possession of any background qualifications, inquire about any relevant qualifications in the H&S field in your country, or look at the NEBOSH International General Certificate.
I hope that has helped you get started, I do not have any knowledge outside of the UK, but this would be the approach I would use in your position.

First thing to do is get to know someone with a bit more experience and ask him/her how to approach it and rely upon that source until you feel confident togo it alone but remeber there are those with specific knowledge you can tap into. But remember holding a certificate doesn't always mean competence.

Posted By Jackie Gawen Hi Javed We have been safety consultants for a number of years and have worked in a lot of different sectors and have found that the best order of doing things and structure is as follows. 1. carry out risk assessments (as you'd expect) - happy to mail you examples if you like to get you started - jackie.gawen@chilternconsulting.com 2 Policy documents we personally structure as a)Statement - just one page to cover legal requirements b) ROles and resp - Whole chain of braod points as to who does what c) Policy requirements table - a table summarising key mandatory requiremetns d) safe working procedures - how to do X task e) reference section where any additional information explaining things is kept 3. A safety Management/monitoring section Checks - daily, weekly,monthly,etc 4. Some mechanism for measuring performance Acciident stats info from cheks audit etc Hope this helps
