Posted By DAVID FOTHERINGHAM Advice required please. We are about to replace existing glazing in a fire protected stairwell in one of our multi-floor buildings (5 floor). The company we use for this has stated that the glazing does not need to have a fire rating - i'm sure they are wrong. Can anyone confirm what the glazing has to comply with, with possibly a link to the information. We are based in Scotland.

Posted By shaun mckeever Where is the glazing? Is it part of a fire resisting wall or is part of a cross corridor door. If the former then the glazing has to provide the same standard of fire resistance as the wall. If it is in the cross corridor door then I would assume that the door is a smoke stop door in which case the door must be capable of stopping smoke including the seal around the glazing but will not be required to have the same standard of fire resistance as the wall.

Posted By DAVID FOTHERINGHAM The stairwell leads to the ground floor from which you can access outside. Although the staircase is internal to the building, we have fire rated doors which lead to the stairwell on each floor. The walls protecting the stairwell are about 300mm thick brick / plaster. The glazing element in the stairwell is incorporated into the wall which faces outside. I think this was to allow natural light into the stairwell. We also have emergency / standard lighting fitted throughout the stairwell. Is the purpose of fire protection glazing to prevent heat / fire getting into the stairwell from outside the building?
