Posted By peter gannaway I have noticed that my mobile phone significantly affects the reading from my Sound Level Meter when held in close proximity, say 2-3 feet. The effect was to change a result of 65dBA to over 100. I cannot see any reference to this on the web, or in the suppliers (Castles) literature and wondered if anyone else can provide guidance on at what distance from the meter the phone can safely be held without affecting the result. I would also be interested if someone can explain why this happens.

Posted By Robert. I'm not qualified to comment, but your posting prompted me to do a google. I was surprised at the db level that some phones reach though.

Posted By Ron Hunter Sounds like a possible EMC "CE" issue (I guess you're not talking about volume, more to do with the feedback effect I sometimes here through my computer speakers? Why not discuss it with Castle? They are nice people.

Posted By peter gannaway Sorry not to clarify, the interference isn't caused by volume, just seems to drive the machine crazy when the phone is switched on near it. Thanks I will speak to Castle they are nice people, just I hadn't heard of it and wondered if anyone else had the same experience.

Posted By Garry Homer Radio Frequency emissions from your mobile phone - continuous even if not in use, is in the form of pulses. The electric field of these emissions will be greater than 3 volts/metre, the CE max tolerance level, so you should expect it to have this effect.
Wrapping the meter in tin foil should stop it, or turn the phone off!
