forewarned is forearmed or not...............

Posted By Andrew Cartridge This may open up a can of worms, but what the hey.................
The health & safety department has received a request from the construction department, which is "could you let us know when you are coming to site".
Their reasons, the contracts managers would like to be on the site to address any issues raised & close them out.
My opinion is, "that we will have some of the most perfect sites in the UK", according to our reports, because any discrepancies will have been dealt with before we get to site, therefore, giving a false impression.
What is your opinion.................?

Posted By Steve Derby I'd tell them, see what they can achieve. Any serious issues you find after forewarning them really should ring alarm bells.
Then do a follow up later without warning and see what the difference (if any) is.

Posted By Crim I agree, after all it could be useful for you to know what is going on ahead of your visit. You could visit when high risk activities are on the go and then see how they manage when they are aware of your impending visit.
There may be occasions when you plan to visit and, due to reasons beyond your control at the last minute, you are unable to attend.
Works both ways.

Posted By Lilian McCartney I might be a bit naive here but surely its down to working relationships and roles? I always let the manager know when I'm coming and unless its an accident investigation we agree a suitable time (accident inv. has to go ahead quickly - at least at first).
My role is to help them not fault pick and if they see me trusting them hopefully they'll start listening and asking me for advice/help.
Perhaps if you can't get that culture working you could try a mix of planned and unplanned visits

Posted By Andrew Cartridge Obviously not as big a "can of worms" as I expected!
It appears that the majority have spoken.............. unless anybody has something else to add?
Have a good weekend

While I think you must reserve the right to turn up unannounced, you do need to keep the managers on side. What about agreeing to give them warning of most visits but let them know you will do a certain number unannounced? Comparing the outcomes of both will then show how well the managers are really managing H & S.

Posted By GARRY WIZZ I would be happy to warn them. As long as its safety getting done not to fussed. Tell them you are coming. Manager goes to site and gets everyone doing safety , great, in time the manager will get fed up of going out and telling them to do what they should be doing anyway.
takes time, different route, but you end up there.
