Posted By Francis E S Hone I need to know if you need varifocal glasses (prescribed by an optician) for working on DSA equipment should the employer pay in full for them and the eye test or can they offer to pay a percentage of the cost and ask for them to be kept on the premises.

Posted By Ron Hunter If the prescription includes a specific viewing distance required for working with DSE, and varifocals are the only sensible solution for the job (frequent changes of viewing distance - a receptionist for example) then the employer is obliged to pay for the cost of a basic frame and the prescription lenses. Asking that these be retained in the workplace is IMHO, just mean. This question crops up frequently on this Forum. Others will disagree with the above!

Posted By Pete Longworth There are circumstances as Ron has said where it may be appropriate for the employer to provide varifocals eg when the DSE user has to look away from the screen to deal with people for instance. However you also need to consider the fact that, in order to focus on the screen, or other objects at different distances, the DSE user may need to adopt awkward neck postures etc when looking through different areas of the lenses.
As for costs, the employer need only pay for a basic set of frames and the basic prescription lenses. By that I mean the employer does not need to provided ultra thin lenses , or tinted lenses etc. If the employee wants designer spectacles then they must meet the costs themselves. In this instance it would be appropriate for the employer to provide an agreed percentage of the costs,.

Posted By Alan Hoskins As has already been said, the employer is obliged to pay only for basic frames and middle-distance lenses.
If a more complex prescription is required, then we would contribute the equivalent cost toward the more expensive option.
