Posted By John Dunn I have recently heard some information relating to the lifespan of company issued safety footwear saying they sould be replaced after 1 year. Is their any specific legislation relating to this or do some companies issue every year as part of what is deemed as good practice? I would have thought that how long a pair of safety shoes need replacing would be determined by what task they perform within the company.
Thanks
John

Posted By The toecap All PPE should afford the user adequate protection. But suitable and of a recognised standard. Thats all i know. I think they replace after 1 year so as to ensure they are in good order.

Posted By Jonathan Breeze There is no Legislation/ Regulations on this John as it would be too prescriptive.
However the Guidance on Reg 7 (Maintenance & Replacement of Personal Protective Equipment) of the PPE at Work Regs states that manufacturers recommendations should be followed (or words to that effect in Paragraph 48).
So if your manufacturer says "replace every 12 months" then this would be the guidance that a court would follow in the event of injury resulting in a prosecution.
Hope this helps.

As mentioned in a previous thread, no requirements or regs to replace PPE on a specific time annual. Its usually "convinient" to replace all the footwear once a year and certainly keeps the supplier happy! The regs state that PPE should be suitable so as soon as a welly starts leaking it should be replaced. I have the situation where I have office wharehouse based workers who are issued with safety footwear that lasts them well over 12 months, 2or 3 years in some cases. Other employees work outside in quite harsh conditions and go through boots every 3 months or so.
Horses for courses really.
