Posted By Buzz Lightyear Just been following the Legionnaire's Disease ACOP, L8 which says that sentinel hot taps should reach over 50 C withing 1 minute. Can anyone tell me - should this be done with the tap on full blast - or just an average flow?

Posted By Tabs The purpose of checking this is to see whether during normal use of the facility the temperature reaches a level that will reduce the risk of the bacterium surviving and multiplying. Therefore, it is reasonable to deduce that the tap should be run at normal pace - though of course that will vary from person to person anyway. My guidance would be to go for a decent rate and unless you are wildly out, it should be seen as appropriate.

Posted By Chris Packham Fine for testing for adequate temperature to prevent build-up of bacteria. However, far too hot for hand washing. The temperature for this should not exceed 40 deg. C as above this damage will be caused to the lamellar layer in the skin that is only about 2 microns thick and is an important part of the skin's barrier. Dermatologically the ideal temperature for hand washing is 32 deg C. Chris

Posted By Buzz Lightyear Thanks for the responses. In the care homes that we run, we have thermostatic mixer valves - so that the temperature coming out of the tap is reduced to 41 degrees - while it can still be circulated above 50 degrees in the pipes and 60 in the hot water tank. However, my question related to our head office where thermostatic mixer valves are not fitted because those who work in the building have sufficient understanding of hot water.

Posted By Chris L I conducted legionella risk assessments & temp tests for several years and was taught simply to run the tap at a 'normal' level relative to use. If running the tap at full blast sprays water halfway across the room, no-one is likely to use it at that level. Run it at the rate that you would expect someone to use to fill the basin/sink.
