Hi all,
I have never been on either of the courses mentioned above, so I need your help/opinion.
I was asked if is using the fire extinguisher is part of the Fire Marshall course. Do the Fire Marshalls need to attend the Using Fire Extinguishers course?
Thanks in advance

When I give fire warden/marshal courses the syllabus includes fire awareness, selection and use of fire extinguishers, law and responsibilities of a warden etc. So I guess it depends on what course you are talking about and by whom? A warden/Marshall course would be a lot more in-depth that just an extinguisher course. Personally, I wonder if just an extinguisher course is value for money. I try and get my clients to go for fire awareness training as this includes extinguishers and other subjects.

I would never send a marshal on a course that did not lead to them using the different extinguishers.
Most people get a lot from the experience, and always come back with changed perceptions about their usefulness and limitations.
I also agree that awareness is the bigger part of the issue though.

I recently sent 8 fire marshals on a course and it included presentations on clesses of fire, nature of fire, evacuation provedures and a practical session using the types of extinguishers discussed.
I would expect most Fire marshal courses to cover these topics.
Unless of course you are a provider (tongue firmly in cheek)

Sorry before I get picked up I seemed to omit last part of sentence that said "offering both courses as a package"

Hi,
In my company we don't train marshals to use fire extinguishers as a matter of course (although this does happen if they so wish to have the training). We actually refer to our marshals as Evacuation Marshals as it is their role to purely facilitate evacuation, not to tackle a fire.
I do however understand why some companies do like to have their marshals trained in the use of fire extinguishers.

If you expect staff to "use" portable fire equipment (olike nay other equipment) then they MUST be adequatley trained in their use.
In our procedures it states that "fire extinguishers must only be used if trained to do so" otherwise just evacuate.
So if you expect everyone to use portable equipment you must traini everyone in their use if you expect trained persons only to use the equipemnt then I would say train the fire marshalls.
Fire Marshalls and Evacuation Marshalls are like comparing tangerines with oranges - similar but different. Simple - Train them for what you expect them to do.
