Posted By Antony McManus Can anyone offer any guidance, best practice etc on the abovementioned subject i.e. is it a mandatory requirement, legal or otherwise within the UK. Our client is insisting that it is whereas we are unable to locate a defintive requirement within legislation or recognised best practice. Cheers Tony Mc

Posted By holmezy oh,,, and I'll wager that you wont find it stated as a legal requirement anywhere, in any regs! It may be your clients site requirement.....which is different.......but you may have to comply if you want to work on his site!

Posted By Mitch Ask your client to clarify which legislation they are referring to. I have never come across anything "mandatory" it has always been down to risk assessment. When I have been on site welding I have never worn a hard hat with a welding helmet, precautions have been taken to avoid falling objects etc and the Fire Watcher is always a back up whilst welding takes place, you don't look down at a welding arc you look (up) away from it!

Posted By Andrew W Good morning I think your client may be refering to the Construction (Head Protection Regulations) which state 4.—(1) Every employer shall ensure so far as is reasonably practicable that each of his employees who is at work on operations or works to which these Regulations apply wears suitable head protection, unless there is no foreseeable risk of injury to his head other than by his falling. That said I wish I'd got a quid for every welder I've seen on site with just a screen and a fireproof hat!! Plenty of welding screen attachments are available for fitting to hard hats try looking on Arco's website for starters. Andy W
