Posted By John Mac Carthy Dear All I came across an interesting situation with regard to the actual cleaning/degreasing of commercial cooker hoods. I’ve looked into the products being used and those available and have located a safer alternative to using chemicals within an enclosed environment, as previously some rather heavy industrial chemicals were being used without the correct PPE being used by the individual, although supplied. Product details: http://www.cellande.co.uk/shop/201.htm The only issue I find currently is that the individuals doing the work state they require a steam cleaner, the natural risk issue of steam and electrics comes to mind immediately. I don’t know if this is the actual case or to be blunt just plain laziness! The manufacturer’s booklets are unfortunately not available as the premises are public premises and not recently built, with the usual almost impossible to find the actual responsible person dual to multi-site management. Has anyone had experience of this ‘cleaning cooker hoods’ issue and what solutions have you implemented? I can’t determine on such a vast variety of cooker hoods if any of them would be safe to be cleaned via a steam cleaner, my head says it’s a higher risk, what do you think? I’d appreciate your response and solutions either here or at my email address please: JohnMacCarthy25@yahoo.com I appreciate all responses. Thank you John

Posted By MT I can't say I've ever come across an establishment who is using a steam cleaner to clean cooker hoods. Some are using corrosive degreasers (which I actively discourage), others brands such as Deepio and some are using more modern cleaners which are not corrosive, and good old fashioned elbow grease. I would try to get to the bottom of why they are using the steam cleaners. Is it because they don't clean the canopies for weeks, allowing grease to build up, then it's too difficult to remove by scrubbing?

Posted By John Mac Carthy Has anybody got a typical SSOW, method statement or risk assessment for the activity so as I can see the logic behind the control measures implemented by others?
