Posted By GavinR Just wondering if there was a requirement for employers to install fall prevention system to roofs at their premises or is it acceptable to risk assess and set the controls as only competent contractors are permitted to conduct roof works under a PTW and only after provision of adequate risk assessment/method statements detailing compliance to Working at Height Regs and Hierarchy of controls? We very seldom need access to roof and feel the cost of installing permanent fall protection system would out weigh the risk due to likelihood being so low. Any comments folks?

Posted By Fornhelper Gavin You're spot on. No need to put costly controls in place to protect against a non existent hazard. Just have them in place when required. If future work requires full edge protection it might be worth balancing the cost of putting in 'temporary protection' against permanent protection at that point - when you may have to spend some money any way but no need to put it in place 'just in case' you need it at some point in the future - unless obviously there is some need to visit the roof area on a regular basis (e.g. service telephone / phone mast). Regards FH
