Posted By Bill Morrison While at a party last week when asked my profession, it became apparent that I would use any term I could except well I'm an " elf n safety" manager don’t you know, but too late out I came with it. Suddenly people started moving away and I started to get some very strange looks. What’s happening to me, have I become ashamed to be in elf n safety? Or should I use some other cunning way of describing what I do? So any advice of alternative job titles would be gratefully accepted. P.S I was not wearing a Tweed Jacket with leather arm patches, cravat or IOSH tie. Bill

Posted By AFP I never really mind telling people what I do as it always raises a discussion or if you are lucky sometimes a heated point of view based on the pet topic of this weeks media. We are continually faced with pointing out the obvious, revealing the true requirements of insurers and spotting those who engage in the active process of not being sued, so I normally find I have plenty to talk about. I often try and lead them in with something outrageous like body armour for school football matches (only joking). If people get too excited I just revert to reminding then of how bad it would be if something happened to them or to someone they loved. It’s about getting everyone home safe, so stay proud.

Posted By Kieran J Duignan Bill A CMIOSH is a professional who assesses risks to people at work and facilitates change in their behaviour and in their organisation. Like a general medical practitioner, he or she operates on the basis of scientific evidence, the elusive art of 'common sense' and a robust blend of ethics and good humour.

Posted By Pete Longworth Right that defines a CMIOSH. What about everybody else that work in health and safety?

Posted By John A Wright A related matter..... Last year after putting finishing touches to my website (consultant H&S), with a photo of me (clearly looking aged 55) on the homepage holding a clipboard I shortly later read something from the IOSH president along the lines of .... "we're trying to get the profession away from the image of middle-aged men with clipboards....."

Posted By Chris Packham Pete You asked what other titles are there? Not CMIOSH. My visiting card reads: "Dermatological Engineer". No one has the faintest idea what that is, but it usually gives me a chance to explain what I do! Chris

Posted By James Askins "Danger Man" well it sounds good to me! "Risk Erradicator" sounds like you use really large traps :-)

Posted By Al.. I too cannot bring myself to tell people I meet socially that I am a health and safety manager. I use the title Risk Manager when asked then change the subject. Yes I know I should be proud of what I do. Well I am but saying you are in health and safety is not going to get you very far when out on the pull.
