Posted By David Bannister Bit chicken & egg this. If the safety committee is seen to be effective and doing a great job then it will be seen as worthwhile to be a part. Of course this needs committed and enthusiastic members. A clear purpose for the committee helps and a skillful chairperson, along with some authority. I have in the past provided simple training and education to new safety committees in how to be a committee, what's expected of them and how best to deliver. Feedback was positive. I have also seen committees where it was seen as a 2 hour break from production and consequently a totally ineffective group of individuals. I suggest that offering an artificial incentive could possibly lead to this happening, as could a management who just want to "tick the box" as far as consultation is concerned.
