Not strictly a health and safety matter but as many of us wear a variety of hats, a couple of questions
The acorn approach of utilising BS8555 to get a recognised environmental management system is it worth it or is it best to go down the 14001 route?
Do many organisations recognise what BS8555 is?

I thought the 5 or 6 phases of 8555 led to the option of achieving 14001 anyway?

The completion of all the units of BS8555 will lead to certification for 14001. The idea is that for many small businesses it is quite a leap to go from nothing to full certification in one leap. BS8555 provides a staged approach that ensures an organisation gets recognition for the work it has completed without having to get the full certificate. It's comparitivley new so I guess some won't recognise it as they are not fully aware of what it means but is gaining in popularity.

Just because you go down the 14001 route does not mean you have to get certified to it. Why note base the structure of your EMS on 14001 and slowly build uup to a point where if you wnet for certification you could get it. Thereby being able to say you EMS is designed on the principles contained in 14001.

Check the cost
1) you are costing for the phases (1-5)
2) you then have the additional cost with your selected assessment org
I considered the acorn route but when looked at costs decided it was easier to go it alone
