Posted By Craig Neville We are currently undegoing a refurbishment of the staff canteen. We have made provision for staff to use the designated contractors canteen. However one group has placed a microwave in a free office within their building. From a risk assessment POV what should be the considerations. I Have already considered PAT test, fire regs and safe storage of food. Does anyone have any other suggestions or direction? It would be much appreciated. Cheers, Craig.

Posted By Tabs We put a timer between power source and oven ... max time 5 mins. We found that potatos were sometimes getting too well done and causing smoke alarms to go off. A timer requires them to return to the oven every 5 mins or so and that provides monitoring. Works very well, all happy.

Posted By Ron Hunter On this ocassion your staff have ignored what presumably was an authoritive instruction on temporary arrangements. What are the wider implications for this group in terms of your health and safety culture and objectives?

Posted By Ali Stick some "safe operating instructions" on the side (no metal, cover food etc.). I imagine they should already know this having one at home.

Posted By D H Hi Craig - you state "From a risk assessment POV what should be the considerations. I Have already considered PAT test, fire regs and safe storage of food." Why? You have made other arrangements and they should have been suitable and sufficient. Why then let people do their own thing and try to cover all eventualities of their actions? Take control and state that the alternative facilities provide WILL be used. If they are not sufficient then it is down to bad planning and organising. If you had a procedure for carrying out a task and the guys just did what they wanted would you risk assess the possible implications of their actions? I dont think so. Dave
