Posted By Aileen Wilson I have recently noticed an increased number of people wearing MP3 players while at work. This varies from sitting at the computer (prone to it myself); walking along corridors, on stairs, to the car park; in a manufacturing environment and in a laboratory environment. I have concerns as to the safety and health (hearing) of employees and was wondering what, if any, limitations others have placed on the use of this type of personal equipment while at work.

Posted By Pete Longworth The last 2 places I worked had a total ban, no exceptions. This was because it constituted a distraction in an already hazardous environment ie a busy factory. In addition, there was no way of controlling the volume at the ear. As there were areas with reasonably high noise levels it was felt that there was no way of ascertaining whether any measures used to prevent damage to hearing would be effective and whether any actual damage that may occur would be as a result of using an mp3 player, or working in the environment without using the requisite hearing protection correctly.
