Can anyone tell me what training is required for maintenance staff working within a building that contains asbestos in parts. There is an asbestos register in place and staff recieve asbestos awareness training from an inhouse trainer on an annual basis- Is this regarded as sufficient?
Thanks in advance

Are they required to work on any ACM? If so then they would require further task sheet training.
If it's for work on non-ACM's but they need to be aware, then awareness is fine as long as it covers the areas mentioned in the control of asbestos regs.

I would say yes this is OK.
However if they are required to work on it or get involved with clean up after an incident which may damage it then they may need more or the services of a Licensed Contractor if it is a high risk product.
Your Asbestos Management Plan should detail what is required.

training must be in accordance with Reg 10 of CAR 2006. There is no prescriptive requirement for training to be conducted by a UKATA asbestos trainer but its recommended.

For none licenced work they need training and equipment to follow asbestos essentials introduction & tasks, HSE, CITB and others produce general videos also . If its general awareness so as not to disturb materials they are not sure of then cover general awareness of the range of places asbestos can be and stress always ask / investigate before working on potentially suspect material

FOr advice on all asbestos training contact the Airborne environmental consultants (AEC) in Manchester
http://www.theasbestosconsultants.co.uk/
They have fantastic training facilities and tutors. I recommend them and not just for asbestos.
Hope this helps.

Many thanks for all replies so far-
they are not required to work ON asbestos related materials but only need to be aware of the fact that they could be in the area

With what you have put above, i would say being annually trained in asbestos awareness is sufficient.

Agree with Josh, going external can be expensive, and should not be required as long as your in house trainer is competent and covers the bases.

Aec only charged me £40 and offer online interactive courses for the same price. Ive put my guys on it that work night shifts. The system they were put on prevented cheating and full feedback on questions answered.
If its done internal just make sure your up to date with all information, i had forgotten quite alot of information and found it useful to sit myself.
