Posted By The toecap What does the safety signs Etc regs state about the distance of the sign from sdafety apparatus. Is there a maximum distance a sign should be from a fire extinguisher?

Posted By Mitch Toecap, From memory they have to be "clearly marked" I cannot remember any reference to distances, I haven't got a copy but I think it's covered in BS5499, perhaps some lucky sole with access to this document can clarify?

Posted By Coshh Assessor BS5499 Part 10 says signs should be "in close proximity to any hazard or equipment to be identified" - no specific distance.

Posted By Glyn Atkinson Don't forget also that in somewhere like a warehouse where racking can block direct fire exit vision and fire extinguisher signage, that you may need to place directional signage at a visible height from suspension chains to direct personnel in the right direction to find escape routes or safety equipment. If you look around the work place and cannot see the signage for the amount of goods storage, then the signage adjacent to any safety appliance or escape route is not suitable for purpose. Think of any major store - how do you find the tinned peas? - look at height for the canned food sign in the middle of the aisles- same principle to use in your place of work !
